Abscopal effect in recurrent colorectal cancer treated with carbon-ion radiation therapy: 2 case reports
نویسندگان
چکیده
The abscopal effect involves shrinkage and/or remission of distant, unirradiated disease following local irradiation. It is rare and mechanistically remains under study, although recent case reports have seen incidence of the effect increasing with administration of immunomodulatory agents, such as the CTLA-4 inhibitor ipilimumab. The abscopal effect appears to occur in response to radiation therapy and is immune system mediated, although research has predominantly focused on the use of conventional photon irradiation. Particle irradiation offers unique dose distributive benefits, concentrating dose in target tissue while sparing healthy tissue in a manner theoretically superior to photon. Meanwhile, heavy-ion irradiation, such as with carbon ions, offers additional biological effects owing to a superior linear energy transfer delivered on a per-particle basis. Carbon-ion radiation therapy (CIRT) has been used successfully in the treatment of recurrent rectal cancer.

Microwave Ablation and Immune Activation in the Treatment of Recurrent Colorectal Lung Metastases: A Case Report
We present a patient with colorectal metastases confined to the lungs and treated with multiple resections until this was not an option anymore, followed by stereotactic body radiation therapy until this option was drained. Then, the patient was successfully treated with multiple microwave ablations combined with immunological activation targeting the programmed cell death 1 receptor (PD-1), po...
متن کاملThe Abscopal Effect of Radiation Therapy: What Is It and How Can We Use It in Breast Cancer?
The abscopal effect refers to the ability of localized radiation to trigger systemic antitumor effects. Over the past 50 years, reports on the abscopal effect arising from conventional radiation have been relatively rare. However, with the continued development and use of immunotherapy strategies incorporating radiotherapy with targeted immunomodulators and immune checkpoint blockade, the absco...
متن کاملAn abscopal effect in a case of concomitant treatment of locally and peritoneally recurrent gastric cancer using adoptive T‐cell immunotherapy and radiotherapy
The mechanism of abscopal effect is becoming clear by the progress of cancer immunology. A 54-year-old male with recurrent gastric cancer presented an abscopal effect after radiotherapy with concurrent adoptive T-cell immunotherapy (immunoradiotherapy). Immunoradiotherapy has potential to induce abscopal effect by strengthening systemic antitumor immunity even in recurrent cancer.
متن کاملCase Report of Extended Survival and Quality of Life in a Melanoma Patient with Multiple Brain Metastases and Review of Literature
Long-term survival for melanoma patients with multiple brain metastases is rare. A review of the literature reveals only three reported melanoma patients with multiple brain metastases who survived more than 10 years. We present a patient who is recurrence-free 11 years after the diagnosis of three brain metastases. Her treatment consisted of cytokine (interferon and interleukin-2) and chemothe...
متن کاملCarbon ion radiotherapy for oligo-recurrent lung metastases from colorectal cancer: a feasibility study
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for oligo-recurrent lung tumors from colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS From May 1997 to October 2012, 34 consecutive patients with oligo-recurrent pulmonary metastases from CRC were treated with CIRT. The patients were not surgical candidates for medical reasons or patient refusa...
